Iogen Corporation is seeking an experienced scientist to lead a small research team involved in a laboratory program which will improve and advance Iogen’s ethanol fermentation technology.  A fundamental understanding of yeast physiology and eukaryotic metabolism, in addition to bench scale fermentation and previous supervisory experience, are all requirements for this position.

Duties & Responsibilities:

·              Under the direction of the Fermentation Group Leader, contributes to the development of strategies to advance and improve our technology platform for the fermentation of sugars to ethanol.

·              Assumes the lead role in managing the fermentation research portfolio defined for their area, which will include both the design, execution and reporting of their own projects, in addition to the supervisory responsibility for 2-3 junior staff.

·              Experiments are typically carried out in shake-flasks or pilot fermentors but there is also an expectation to assist a larger team in the evaluation of performance of the large scale fermentation operation in Iogen’s demonstration plant.

·              Analyzes samples using techniques such as GC, HPLC, cell mass analysis, microscopy, enzyme activity, fermentability and plate assay

·              Participates in coordination of projects with consultants and collaborators.

Qualifications:

·              M.Sc in Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Microbiology with a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience OR B.Sc. in Biotechnology, Biochemistry with a minimum of 5 years of fermentation experience.

·              Minimum 2 years of experience supervising full time laboratory staff is required.  Project and performance management experience will be an asset.

·              Experience with genetic engineering techniques, cell culture, requirements for cell growth and common analysis techniques to phenotypically characterize microorganisms are required.

·              Demonstrate a thorough fundamental understanding of yeast metabolism, redox metabolism and conversion routes for pentose sugars.

·              Intermediate to advanced Excel spreadsheet skills are required and experience working with kinetic models will be an asset.

1176 - Staff Scientist – Pentose Fermentation

Scope

Iogen Corporation is seeking an experienced scientist to take a leading role in pentose fermentation research under the direction of the Fermentation Group Leader.  He/She will become the leading expert in the company in this area, supervise a small research team conducting research in the fermentation of sugars to valuable products and provide (experimental) support in the design of a commercial-scale cellulose ethanol plant.  A fundamental understanding of yeast physiology, eukaryotic (redox) metabolism, bench scale fermentation, pervious supervisory experience and good communication skills are essential for this position.

Iogen is located in Ottawa, Canada.  Relocation and immigration assistance would be provided

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assumes a leading role in the development of strategies to advance and improve our technology platform for fermentation of pentose sugars to valuable products.
  • Manages the fermentation research portfolio defined for their area, which includes:
  • Demonstrates creative problem solving skills and accountability for meeting project timelines
  • Provides technical guidance to staff in identifying technical risks, designing, scheduling and carrying out projects, in addition to mentoring the staff by identifying targets for growth, setting goals and managing performance.
  • Participates in coordination of outside consultants and collaborations.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Biochemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology or Biochemical Engineering with 4+ years experience in yeast fermentation and metabolic engineering
  • Minimum, 2 years experience supervising full time laboratory staff is required.
  • Strong background and expertise on the physiology of fermentative organisms including yeast and bacteria is vital.  This encompasses thorough knowledge and understanding of metabolic routes, and especially redox metabolism.
  • Demonstrated ability to link growth kinetics and physiological data to imposed environmental conditions (such as aeration and nutrient) using computer calculations and newly developed models is essential)
  • Project and performance management experience in addition to supervisory experience in an industrial environment is a significant asset.
  • Industrial experience in eukaryotic fermentations would also be considered an asset.
