Nicholas LINDLEY is a CNRS Research Director and Head of LISBP since 2005 during which time the independent evaluation committees have twice awarded an A+ rating to the laboratory. During this period he has successfully integrated teams from an adjacent laboratory, specialised in chemical engineering into the unit to achieve a truly multi-disciplinary set up, regrouping more than 280 people. He has also been actively engaged in the Toulouse Genopole as responsible for the overall microbiology programme financed over an initial five year period (2000-2005) and has since been part of the Scientific Steering Committee, notably organising an internal analysis of the state of the art of the Genotoul Platforms highlighting future opportunities for development. He was appointed Director of Toulouse Genopole (www.genotoul.fr) in 2011.
After initial training in Applied Biology in the UK specialising in Microbial Ecology, he was later involved in doctoral and post-doctoral studies in microbial biochemistry specifically examining methylotrophic and hydrocarbonotrophic yeasts and filamentous fungi. He moved to France in 1984 on a prestigious Royal Society Fellowship prior to integrating the CNRS in 1986 to develop quantitative microbial physiological aspects of industrial fermentations. In 1991, he started his own group relating to Microbial Physiology and Metabolic Engineering, one of the initiators of this type of research in France, and was promoted to Research Director in 1995. His research on lactic acid bacteria saw his research group awarded the 2nd Excel Trophy for Scientific Innovation (Microorganisms and Enzymes for Agro-industrial Usage) in 1997.



His research interests have moved from lactic acid bacteria and metabolic engineering of amino acid and vitamin producing bacteria during the 1990s to a systems biology approach, using in-house post-genomic technology in the 2000s, recently shifting towards a global view of factors influencing colonisation and virulence in pathogenic bacteria with to developing new therapeutic strategies.



He has published more than 100 peer reviewed papers and book chapters in specialised microbiology and biotechnology journals, addressed keynote invited speaker communications at more than 30 conferences, and has been part of the Editorial Committees of “Biotechnology Letters”(1990-2005), Journal of General Microbiology (1992-1999), Applied Microbiology & Biotechnology (1995-2004) and Applied & Environmental Microbiology (since 2004).
